Program Overview

GBNRTC is relaunching its internship program to strengthen its relationship with academic institutions in Western New York and beyond in a way that is beneficial to internship participants and GBNRTC. Interns will work directly with key staff on transportation planning initiatives that improve the quality of life in our region.

Important Dates for Program Applications:

Fall 2024 – Application Deadline: June 1st, 2024

  • Urban/Transportation Planning: The intern will work with the planners at GBNRTC to assist with various transportation planning initiatives including:

    o Regional Bike Master Plan Implementation

    o Regional Roadway Safety Action Plan Development

    o Regional Traffic Signal Communications Feasibility Study

    o Regional Climate Action Plan Development

    Data Analytics and Multimodal Traffic Modeling and Simulation: The intern will work with the planners at GBNRTC to assist with various data analytics and multimodal traffic modeling efforts including

    o Data Collection and Organization

    o Data Visualization with GIS, etc.

    o Converting Real-Time Data to Historical Data

    Business Administration: The intern will work with the Executive Director on business process improvement initiatives and support for all business aspects of GBNRTC including human resource management, financial management, strategic business planning, etc. GBNRTC is a small business that follows mostly public sector business practices and has 13 full-time employees. Candidates with an interest in gaining experience at that scale or with the public sector would be suited for this internship.

  • In-person availability

    o Summer 2024 – June-Aug 2024, 25-40 hours per week

    o Fall 2024 – Sept-Nov 2024, 10-20 hours per week

    Strong communication and interpersonal skills

    Interest in developing skills and pursuing a career in one of the focus areas. Pursuing a degree in one of the focus areas is preferred but not required.

    Basic skills and the ability to learn more advanced skills with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams are required.

    The ability to learn software systems applicable to assigned focus areas is required and prior experience is a plus.

    The ability to work collaboratively with a team-oriented mindset

  • $18/hour for undergrad and $20/hour for graduate students

    Gain experience working in a collaborative and innovative planning environment
